Today, Mark Burdett and I presented 510pen and Tidepools, respectively, at the monthly Open Oakland planning meeting at City Hall. There was definitely enthusiasm and clear overlap with the goals of the Digital Divide group, as the mesh was presented as principally important for spreading broadband access across underserved areas of Oakland (such as International Blvd in East Oakland).
I presented Tidepools, albeit briefly, as a tool for hyperlocal neighborhood mapping - a need which had been expressed by Spike (one of the lead organizers) in an email the previous week.
Afterwards, we chatted with Nicole Neditch, a woman who works for the City of Oakland and regularly attends OpenOakland meetups. She informed us of plans for activating the dark fiber along International Blvd and agreed we should keep each other informed as plans progress.
